Location: Northern Costa Blanca, Spain.

Overview: This former fortress town is now a popular holiday destination, one of the best loved on the Costa Blanca, it is also a popular area for re-location and many Brits and north Europeans have settled here in recent years.
Denia History: Early evidence shows that there were probably settlements in and around Denia during Neolithic times, some time later a Greek colony was founded named Hemeroskopeion, the Romans arrived in the 3rd century BC and there are still artefacts from their occupation of the town. Recorded history goes back to the Muslim Occupation (8th to 13th centuries), during which time the castle of Denia was first built (11th - 12th century). The Christian re-conquest occurred in 1244 when forces under Jaime I of Aragon recaptured the town. Denia became prosperous during the 19th century with the growth of the raisin trade although it later fell into decline after the outbreak of phylloxera, which all but destroyed this industry.
Denia rose once again during the 20th century as the tourism industry grew, and later property development, with rich Europeans looking for holiday homes in the sun, many later choosing to re-settle in the town.

Denia Beaches: Denia has numerous superb sandy beaches, some having 'Blue Flag' status for cleanliness, they stretch along some 20 kilometres of coastline and include: Les Bovetes, Punta Raset, Les Deveses, Les Marines and La Marineta Cassiana.
Places to Visit in and Around Denia: There are a number of interesting places to visit in and around Denia and these include Denia castle, dating from the 11th century and now an Archaeological Museum, the picturesque Val de Laguar, the Toy Museum, the Cape of San Antoni Sea Reserve, the Mount Montgo Natural Park, the fish market (La Lonja) in the harbour and the Ethnological Museum.
